Key Points
- Study Objective: To compare 100% single applications of surface-applied broadcast Weed-N-Feed (WNF) 32% UAN treatments to Conceal® system single and dual band nitrogen applications during planting.
- Yield Improvement: At-plant nitrogen applications are far superior in producing increased yield. We’ve seen yield improvements up to 18.3 Bu/A over six years at the PTI farm.
- Revenue Impact: 2023 planter-applied nitrogen equated to additional revenue gains over WNF applications by +$29.74/A (single band) and +$58.94/A (dual band).
- Conceal: A Conceal system is a unique planter attachment that allows growers to place nitrogen in a high concentration dual or single band positioned 3” away from the seed trench in depths near 1.5”.
Is Banded Fertilizer a Valuable Investment?
We’ve talked about the value of at-plant banded fertilizer in the furrow to increase yield before. However, what’s the impact on yield and revenue when we compare surface-applied broadcast Weed-N-Feed to banded nitrogen solutions that are applied during planting?
We took to the PTI Farm and compared single applications of surface-applied broadcast Weed-N-Feed UAN treatments to our Conceal system single and dual band at-plant nitrogen applications.
What we found was that Conceal out-yielded traditional 100% WNF consistently. While both the single and dual band out-yielded WNF, the dual band showed a far greater increase in yield across the six years of our study.
In 2023, Conceal single band had 5.6 Bu/A higher yield while Conceal dual band out-performed WNF by 11.1 Bu/A. This equated to improved revenue results of +$29.74/A (single band) and +$58.94/A (dual band).
These are significant advantages that show the value of banding fertilizer during planting!
