Reveal Residue Management Corn Study

Reveal, the frame-mounted row cleaner from Precision Planting, removes as much residue as possible without removing soil.

Key Points

Objective: This study evaluates the yield and economic benefit of Reveal, a frame-mounted row cleaner system, in a corn after corn strip-till environment.
CleanSweep: We have seen that residue managers increase yield. When we look back to 2021, we see that CleanSweep increased yield by 2.7 Bu/A.
Reveal: When we upgrade to Reveal, we see the yield increase boosted even more. In 2021, it bumped up to a 4.5 Bu/A increase. In 2023, we saw a 4.9 Bu/A yield increase.
Economics: In 2023, our highest-performing setting (Reveal 20# Down) brought in an extra $26.02/A.

Residue management is a necessary part of growing today's operations to maximize profitability. Tougher stalks and more corn-on-corn acres mean a heavier load of residue that needs to be controlled.

In this study, we are looking at the latest in residue management: Reveal. Reveal is frame-mounted, so unlike other row cleaners, it gets rid of that row unit chatter. It has an internal gauge wheel that precisely controls the depth of the cleaning tines. It also has an airbag that makes sure the depth that it’s set at stays consistent. The pressure of the airbag can be controlled on the 20|20 Monitor or utilizing a manual controller in the cab.

Proper residue management ensures that residue doesn’t end up in the seed trench to compete with seedlings for moisture or to harbor diseases. In fact, we’ve already proven that residue management increases yield. When we look at data from 2021, we see that CleanSweep (which allows growers to make row cleaner adjustments from the cab) boosted yield by 2.7 Bu/A.

So we took to the PTI Farm to put Reveal to the test to see how this frame-mounted cleaner would further improve yield.

In this agronomic study, we compared the absence of row cleaners and floating row cleaners to that of Reveal at the following notch and PSI settings:

Reveal Notch 1 10# Down
Reveal Notch 1 20# Down
Reveal Notch 1 30# Down
Reveal Notch 1 40# Down

In 2023, our results show that the Reveal at 20# PSI down in Notch 1 provided the highest yield gains, with a yield increase of 4.9 Bu/A, and a corresponding return on investment of $26.02/A.
